Do Something Different! Children In Need

As part of the Children Need Activities on Friday, Mr Hughes' maths group did something different by using the Nintendo Wii and Mario and Sonic at the Olympics.

We have been working on data analysis and mean, mode, median and range in class recently. The game provided a unique way to gather some data to do our analysis. We played the game for about 20 min and everyone got to do the 100 meter sprint. We recorded this and then, used the data to find out the average speed of the class.

Here we are working below after our sprints. Our average time was 10.674 seconds.

Mario Kart Day 2

Today we continued to work with Mario Kart and started to develop our commentaries. We started by watching yesterdays race and warming up our skills. Then we watched a race that I (Mr Hughes) had done. We used this as our stimulus for our newspaper report. We watched the race 2 times, firstly to record words to describe the events of the race and secondary to record ideas about opinions and other details. The class interviewed Yoshi finally about his race to gather the last of the information they needed.

We share wrote a opening paragraph and then we started to write, we are going to continue on Thursday.

Could you use the video we watched to describe the race?

Mario Kart Commentary

Today in year 6 we kicked of our work with Games Based Learning and Literacy. We have been looking at newspapers and report writing recently. This we started looking at commentaries. We used Mario Kart to give ourselves something real to comment on. This is the video we started to use, can you choose a character and give us the commentary of what is going on?

Here are some of our designs!!!!

We have been investigating sound by testing pitch and vibration.
We investigated to find the materials which were the best sound insulators. We found that bubble wrap was the best at sound-proofing the buzzer.

Video Conferencing Take 3 and 4

This week we met up again with Oakdale Juniors. We also started to meet up with Wanstead Church school. We did both on Friday afternoon after some technical problems on Tuesday.

Firstly we met with Wanstead Church We did a few of our science presentations from last week and then listened to the other class demonstrate circuits. We both asked each other some questions. It was a short but good meeting.

Then we met up with Oakdale again. Our Tuesday session was cancelled due to unavoidable technical issue. We met up and listened to 6H's presentations. We then asked them a few questions.

We then challenged each other with 5 questions we had prepared. We did quite well getting (I think) 4 out of 5 right. Yay!!!

We then quickly sung the forces song together that we had learnt. Overall a great meet up.

Now next week the plan is to start the quiz challenge. Each class will come up with 20 questions on a topic and then they will challenge each other.

Who will be the best?

Video Conferencing Take 2

Today Children in Year 6 from Nightingale and Oakdale Juniors met up via video conference.

This was the second time we have done this - the last time was before Christmas.

This time we started on showing our science knowledge. Children in 6GH had all prepared a very short 1 or 2 minute presentation about a science topic or idea. 6GH presented some of their presentations to Year 6 at Oakdale Juniors. Oakdale asked questions in response, trying to challenge our science knowledge.

We got stumped on who created the standard circuit symbols and the distance for the earth to the moon. Can anyone help? Oakdale didn't know the answers either. :oP

Oakdale showed us a great science song with actions about forces.

Hopefully we will learn some of it for next week and join in with Oakdale. Oakdale will be doing their own presentations next week, which we will watch and try and stump them with our own questions.

It was good fun this week and we look forward to meeting again next week.

Watch out soon for a video clip of the event as well.
